Somalia envoy storms out of Uhuru’s State House meeting

Somalia envoy storms out of a meeting convened by President Uhuru Kenyatta at State House Nairobi.

On Tuesday, June 14, a representative for the Somali Republic in Kenya walked out of a meeting hosted by President Uhuru Kenyatta at State House Nairobi.

Mohamud Ahmed Nur Tarsan, according to Somali media, was displeased when Kenyan President Kenyatta invited Somaliland representatives.

Kenya acknowledges Somaliland as an autonomous regional government, but Somalia has refused to recognize it.

According to Radio Dalsan, a media outlet located in Somalia, Kenya had invited the officials in the capacity of ambassadors and “placed the two flags – Somalia and Somaliland together in the venue.”

Tarsan reportedly informed Villa Somalia and was given the go-ahead to walk out of the event.

According to reports, President Kenyatta was planning to give a pre-election speech to diplomats in advance of the August 9 elections.

This comes only days after Kenyatta and Somalia’s new president, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, met in Mogadishu for the latter’s inauguration.

During his visit, Uhuru pledged to work toward restoring the two countries’ borders and expanding flights to Mogadishu.

The measure, according to the Head of State, will strengthen bilateral trade and boost the economy of both countries.

In his first statement after taking over from Farmajo, Mohamud promised to improve relations between Somalia and its neighbors, notably Kenya.

At the state house event, Uhuru also addressed members of the diplomatic corps who attended the ceremony as well as Kenyan Ambassadors and High Commissioners affirming Kenya’s commitment to being a friendly country to all by seeking only to develop bonds of friendship and collaboration with all partners.
