Speaker Wetangula gives IG Koome two hours to account for missing Gabriel Oguda

Speaker Moses Wetangula directs Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wa to urgently liaise with IG Koome over the whereabouts of Gabriel Oguda.

The National Assembly has been plunged into chaos following revelations by Minority Leader Opiyo Wandayi regarding the alleged abduction of Gabriel Oguda, a vocal social media activist and policy analyst in his office.

The incident has sparked a fierce debate within the Assembly, raising serious concerns about the state of civil liberties in the country.

Speaker Moses Wetangula has directed Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wa to urgently liaise with Inspector General of Police Japhet Koome to ascertain Oguda’s whereabouts within the next two hours.

“I will direct the Majority Leader to get in touch with the IG and find out about the officer working at the Minority Leader’s office and report back,” directed Wetangula.

Wetangula’s directive comes amid mounting pressure from the opposition, demanding immediate action and accountability. “Your staff will be protected under my watch. But we will not protect those who have broken the law,” stated Wetangula.

Wandayi’s emotional address to the National Assembly detailed the chilling circumstances surrounding the disappearance of Gabriel Oguda.

According to Wandayi, Oguda was forcibly taken from his home in the early hours of Tuesday, June 25.

The activist managed to make a distress call to Wandayi at 2:20 am, reporting that police officers were breaking into his compound.

“He called me under great distress, indicating that men he identified as police were forcefully entering his home. Ten minutes later, my phone was jammed, and I was unable to reach him,” Wandayi recounted.

This has left Wandayi and his colleagues deeply troubled, as efforts to locate Oguda in various police stations across Nairobi have proven futile.

Wandayi’s impassioned plea to the Assembly called for immediate action, demanding Oguda’s release or, at the very least, that he be presented in court to face any charges.

“This cannot be treated as business as usual. If such actions can happen to someone from my office, it threatens the independence of our Parliament,” Wandayi asserted.

The Minority Leader’s revelations have raised critical questions about the government’s commitment to upholding legal rights and due process.

He criticized the authorities for not informing Oguda of the reasons for his arrest or granting him access to legal representation. “The government must explain why Oguda’s rights have been blatantly disregarded,” Wandayi demanded.

Majority Leader Ichung’wa echoed Wandayi’s concerns, agreeing that the situation required immediate investigation and resolution. He reassured the Assembly that the protection of parliamentary staff was paramount under his watch. 

However, he also emphasized the importance of law and order, suggesting that those who have violated the law should not expect immunity.

The debate comes after it emerged that nine other people have been allegedly abducted. Other X users who are suspected to have been abducted include; Drey Mwangi, TemperCR7, Harriet, Shad, Franje, Worldsmith, and Hilla254.
