Standard Group appoints new acting CEO

The Standard Group PLC has announced the appointment of Chaacha Mwita as the Acting Group Chief Executive Officer (Ag. CEO), effective July 1, 2025.
The Standard Group PLC has announced the appointment of Chaacha Mwita as the Acting Group Chief Executive Officer (Ag. CEO), effective July 1, 2025.
In an announcement on Wednesday, July 2, the company said the appointment followed the resignation of Marion Gathoga Mwangi, who exited the role on Monday, June 30.
“Pursuant to the provisions of Regulation 10 of the Thirteenth Schedule of the Capital Markets (Public Offers, Listings and Disclosures) Regulations, 2023, the Board of Directors of The Standard Group PLC (“the Company”) wishes to notify its shareholders and the general public of the appointment of Mr. Chaacha Mwita as Ag. Group Chief Executive Officer of the Company, effective 1st July 2025. He has also been appointed as an Executive Director to the Board,” the statement read.
According to Standard Group, Mwita brings to the role over 20 years of experience in journalism, leadership, and policy engagement across both locally and internationally.
He has previously served as the Editorial Director at the Standard Group and most recently as a member of its Board.
Mwita’s career has included key roles at Nation Media Group, the Aga Khan Foundation, the African Population and Health Research Centre (APHRC), and the Thomson Foundation in London.
Commenting on the appointment, the company expressed confidence in Mwita’s ability to steer the organisation forward.
“We believe Chaacha’s solid achievements as a distinguished journalist and media leader will add value to the organisation as it seeks to reinvigorate its journalism to uphold its tenets of boldness and independence,” the statement added.
Mwita’s expertise includes media sustainability, newsroom capacity building, and the development of new business models for media organisations.

Additionally, he has conducted comprehensive media assessments across several African countries, including Kenya, South Africa, Uganda, Tanzania, Zambia, Zimbabwe, and Mozambique.
In addition to his corporate roles, Mwita has participated in advisory panels such as the Africa Means Business initiative under the Thomson Foundation, working alongside leading institutions including Oxford University’s Centre for the Study of African Economies, the African Economic Research Consortium (AERC), and Strathmore Business School.
He holds a Bachelor of Education (Arts) degree and a postgraduate diploma in Mass Communication from the University of Nairobi, as well as an MBA from the University of St Gallen, Switzerland.
Mwita has also completed executive leadership programmes at the Haas School of Business (University of California, Berkeley) and the University of Luxembourg.
Mwita, a published author and a former Fanning Fellow for Journalism at the Kettering Foundation in the U.S., has also consulted for organisations such as Internews and UNICEF, contributing to projects focused on media development, public communication, and governance.
