Sudan army claims "the hour of victory is near" adding that in control of the airport, palace, and military headquarters

Sudan army claims “the hour of victory is near” adding that in control of the airport, palace, and military headquarters.

Sudanese army chief General Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan told Al Jazeera TV the army was in control of the presidential palace, military headquarters, and airport after clashes had erupted between troops and a powerful paramilitary group on Saturday.

Burhan’s comments came in a recorded phone call with the Qatar-based network.

It followed a live phone interview the station aired with the commander of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), who said his forces had seized the presidential palace, the army chief’s residence, and Khartoum international airport.

There has been differing accounts with both the military and the RSF have claimed they control Khartoum’s international airport and other key installations where fighting raged overnight.

In a statement on Sunday, the Sudanese army claimed “the hour of victory is near”.

“We pray for mercy for the innocent lives taken by this reckless adventure taken by the rebel Rapid Support militia… We will have good news for our patient and proud people soon, God willing,” the statement said.

Sudan army adds it has taken hold of strategic bases belonging to the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in Port Sudan, Kasala, Kadaref, Demazin, and Kosti.

For its part, the RSF is claiming to control 90% of the capital, Khartoum, with only the remaining 10% in the hands of the military.

It also says that it holds sway over several strategic sites in Omdurman and Darfur, as well as Merowe Airport in the north.

Following the clashes, it has been reported that 56 civilians have lost their lives with 595 others wounded according to the Central Committee of Sudan Doctors.

Meanwhile, the armed forces have said it would not negotiate with the RSF unless the force dissolved.

The army told soldiers seconded to the RSF to report to nearby army units, which could deplete RSF ranks if they obey.

However, RSF leader General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo — better known as Hemedti — called General Burhan a “criminal” and a “liar”.

“We know where you are hiding and we will get to you and hand you over to justice, or you die just like any other dog,” General Hemedti said.

A prolonged confrontation could plunge Sudan into widespread conflict as it struggles with economic breakdown and tribal violence, derailing efforts to move toward elections.
