Trump accuses Obama of treason over Epstein probe

President Donald Trump Revives Obama coup allegations as Epstein probe sparks fresh debate.
Former US President Barack Obama could be staring at treason charges should President Donald Trump’s administration decide to press charges related to what Trump has claimed was a coup attempt during the 2016 election.
President Trump has ignited fresh political controversy after accusing his predecessor of orchestrating efforts to overturn his election victory, linking the accusation to renewed investigations into the late Jeffrey Epstein’s sex trafficking case.
The statement, delivered during a meeting with Philippines President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. at the White House, followed an announcement by Trump’s Department of Justice that Epstein’s long-time associate Ghislaine Maxwell would be questioned again in prison.
“No lead is off-limits,” Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche declared, signalling a wide-ranging probe into Epstein’s network.
Trump dismissed the Epstein case itself as a “witch hunt” before turning his anger on Obama.
“The witch hunt that you should be talking about is, they caught President Obama, absolutely cold,” he said.
He further alleged, without evidence, that Obama had tried to “steal” the 2016 election – a claim rejected by Obama’s spokesperson as “outrageous.”
The allegations come during renewed interest in Epstein’s connections to powerful figures. Epstein died in a New York jail in 2019 while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges.
Although his death was ruled a suicide, conspiracy theories — particularly from the far right — have persisted, claiming a deep-state cover-up aimed at protecting his influential clients, according to France24.
Trump has attempted to balance the political fallout. While his administration concluded in early July that Epstein’s death was not suspicious and that no client list existed, many in his base remain unconvinced. Some view Trump as the only figure willing to uncover the full extent of Epstein’s crimes.
To appease his supporters, Trump ordered Attorney General Pam Bondi to seek the release of sealed grand jury testimony from Epstein’s past cases.

However, the effort yielded little and did not satisfy conspiracy theorists demanding names and proof of elite involvement.
The issue reignited after The Wall Street Journal reported on a strange 2003 birthday card allegedly sent by Trump to Epstein. The card featured a drawing of a naked woman with Trump’s signature forming her pubic hair and a cryptic reference to a “wonderful secret.” Trump has denied sending the note and filed a lawsuit against the publication.
While Trump has never been charged in relation to Epstein, he was photographed with him at parties and was once considered a close acquaintance. As calls for transparency mount, Trump appears eager to redirect attention toward his political enemies — particularly Obama.
Legal experts warn that Trump’s claims about Obama carry no legal consequence unless backed by solid evidence. But politically, the strategy could help Trump galvanise his base ahead of the 2026 midterms, where loyalty and outrage remain potent tools.
Barack Obama’s spokesman, Patrick Rodenbush, issued a rare rebuke of President Trump, calling Trump’s pledge to use the Justice Department to go after his predecessor “ridiculous and a weak attempt at distraction.”
“Out of respect for the office of the presidency, our office does not normally dignify the constant nonsense and misinformation flowing out of this White House with a response,” Obama’s spokesman said. “But these claims are outrageous enough to merit one.”
