Terrorists attack a concert hall in Moscow weeks after U.S. Embassy in Russia warned of an imminent attack.

Gunmen in combat fatigues burst into a big concert hall in Moscow and fired automatic weapons at the crowd, causing deaths and injuries, Russian media has reported.

The attack comes weeks after the U.S. and U.K. embassies in Russia issued alerts over “imminent plans” for terrorist attacks in Moscow, urging citizens in the capital to stay alert and avoid large crowds just hours after Russia’s security service claimed to have foiled an Islamic State plot against a Moscow synagogue.

In an alert, the American embassy said it was “monitoring reports that extremists have imminent plans to target large gatherings” in the Russian capital, including concerts.

The embassy urged U.S. citizens “to avoid large gatherings” in Moscow.

The embassy also advised Americans to “be aware of your surroundings” and monitor local media for updates.

The alert offered no further details on the nature of the potential attack or the suspected extremist perpetrators.

The British embassy and foreign office posted the U.S. warning to its website and social media account, urging U.K. nationals against all travel to Russia.

The U.S. alert was issued hours after Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) said it had thwarted a planned terrorist attack on a Moscow synagogue.

The agency, a successor to the Soviet-era KGB, said the shooting had been planned by a cell from the Afghan arm of the militant Islamic State group.

The FSB said the terrorists were killed when resisting arrest, adding that firearms, ammunition and components for an improvised explosive device were found and seized from the area.

It is unclear if the alleged terrorist attack foiled by the FSB was related to the warning from the U.S. embassy.
