U.S vows to support LGBTQ community in Kenya

U.S. (United States of America) vows to continue supporting the rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) members in Kenya

U.S. (United States of America) vows to continue supporting the rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) members in Kenya.

Meg Whitman, the US ambassador to Kenya, made the announcement on March 14 following a week-long discussion with LGBTQ individuals and stakeholders.

According to Whitman, the USA proudly pursues initiatives to shield homosexual people from prejudice and violence and will keep defending their human rights and equality.

In a statement on her Twitter handle on Tuesday, Whitman revealed that in the past week, she met with the LGBTQI+ community and its stakeholders.

“Over the past week, my team and I met with the LGBTQI+ community and stakeholders to support the human rights of LGBTQI+ persons. The U.S. proudly advances efforts to protect LGBTQI+ persons from discrimination & violence and will continue to stand up for human rights and equality,” said Whitman.

The community has been on the receiving end of counterblasts since the Supreme Court made a ruling allowing the legal registration of the rights group.

Since the controversial decision was made, the country has been divided on opinion as LGBTQ rights groups have warned members of the community to stay safe, fearing for their physical safety.

The debate has seen both leaders in the government and the opposition take one stance; condemning LGBTQ relations in the country.

Earlier, the United States government dismissed claims of promoting the LGBTQ agenda in the country following the KSh 16 billion donor funding.

Speaking in Kajiado on Friday, March 3, Whitman said the US respects Kenya’s position regarding the controversial LGBTQ community.

She noted that even though the US views LGBTQ rights as human rights, they would not force such a decision on any country.

“The Kenyan government knows the US perspective, but we also respect their views on LGBTQ rights. There is no linkage between food and drought relief and Kenyans’ stance on LGBTQ,” she said.
