Mt Kenya UDA politicians express their opposition to the creation of an additional deputy party leader position amid cracks in the ruling party.

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua currently holds the position, but there are reports that the party may create a second deputy leader position to accommodate a powerful politician from a different part of Kenya.

In addition to voicing their opposition to the newly proposed deputy leader position, the leaders—led by Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga—insisted that the Secretary-General position and the new position should be reserved solely for leaders from the Mt Kenya region.

“There must be a Party leader and a Deputy Party Leader, the rest can be whatever they want, and we are demanding that as members of the UDA party,” Governor Kahiga said.

“We have one party leader, and so importantly is to have one deputy party leader.”

The lawmakers say that the sole official deputy party leader in the party should be Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

In order to facilitate the process of choosing representatives ahead of the general elections in 2027, the politicians also demanded that all parties in the area unite under the United Democratic Alliance (UDA).

The demands come a month before the party’s grassroots elections scheduled to take place in December.

“We should appoint a UDA party candidate so that we can have a UDA government in 2027 which is very strong,” one of the leaders said.
