Nyandarua County is in mourning following the death of Beth Wahito, a specially elected Member of the County Assembly, who died in a road accident along the Nairobi-Nakuru Highway.

The news was confirmed on Sunday, June 22, by Nyandarua County Assembly Speaker Wachira Waiganjo who eulogized the late Wahito as a trailblazer in politics and a dedicated public servant.

“It is with deep sadness and shock that we have received the news of the sudden passing of Hon. Beth Wahito, a specially elected Member of the Nyandarua County Assembly from Njabini Kiburu Ward, through a tragic accident along the Nairobi-Nakuru Road,” he said.

According to Waiganjo, Wahito’s political career spanned over 30 years, during which she broke numerous barriers to become one of the most respected leaders in the region.

“Hon. Wahito was a courageous and committed leader whose political journey spanned over three decades. She stepped into leadership at a time when women faced many barriers in politics and public service,” he added.

Waiganjo noted that Wahito’s service included terms as a councillor in the former Nyandarua County Council and as a specially elected member in both the First and Third County Assemblies.

“Throughout her career—as a councillor in the defunct Nyandarua County Council, a specially elected Member of the First and the Third County Assembly—she led with courage, strength, and determination.

“She was not afraid to speak up for what she believed was right and worked tirelessly to uplift the lives of the underserved in her community,” he noted.

Beyond politics, Waiganjo pointed out that Wahito was cherished as a mother figure and a source of warmth and inspiration.

“Above all, Hon. Wahito was a loving mother, a guardian to many, and a proud grandmother. Her warmth, bold spirit, and fearless commitment to public service will remain etched in our hearts.

“On behalf of the Nyandarua County Assembly family, I extend our heartfelt condolences to her family, friends, and the people of Njabini Kiburu and Kinangop. May you find comfort and strength in the beautiful legacy she leaves behind,” he further said.

Kanjiuri Ridge MCA Thuo Gachino, who spent time with Wahito shortly before her death, expressed deep grief over the loss.

“Hon. Wahito was a distinguished leader who, through her experience in the political arena, guided us. I do not know how we will be operating in the Assembly without her—she was motherly to us all,” he said.

Gachino’s recounted their last moments together and a poignant final message she posted online.

“We had spent the day together in Naivasha only to learn of her death when I arrived home in Nakuru. It is very devastating. I also remember like 10 hours ago she updated on her Facebook timeline ‘ndathii mutitu’ meaning ‘I am going to the forest.’ I commented ‘geithania mutitu’—little did I know she was going to a thick forest in the name of death, and she was not to come back,” he added.
