Uhuru unveils new Kenyatta University Council after disbanding its council and firing VC Prof Paul Wainaina.
After ousting Vice-Chancellor Prof. Paul Wainaina, the government on Wednesday, July 14 unveiled a new Kenyatta University Council.
In a Gazette notice, the government unveiled a new six-member team headed by former University of Nairobi (UoN) Vice-Chancellor Prof Chrispus Kiamba.
Other members include; Jane Wamoko, Carilus Odumbe, Maj. Gen (Rtd) Bashir Yussuf, Andrew Nyanchoga, and Alice Muita.
At the time of his appointment, Kiamba was a faculty member at the Department of Real Estate and Construction Management, School of the Built Environment, College of Architecture and Engineering at UoN.
Prior to taking the position of Higher Education, Science and Technology, Government of Kenya, he was also the first Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Science and Technology.
The appointment follows Wainaina’s dismissal from his position as a result of a dispute over the title deed to a parcel of land owned by Kenyatta University.
Earlier President Uhuru had called out the university management for opposing plans to cede part of the institution’s land.
The proposed allocations include; 30 acres for the World Health Organization (WHO), Africa Centre for Disease Control (10 acres), the Kenyatta University Teaching, Referral, and Research Hospital (108 acres), and, another 190 acres for the 10,000 Kamae squatters.
The council however declined to hand over the title deed, insisting the university had plans for the expansive parcel of land.
Meanwhile, the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) has instructed its lawyers to move to court and block the new developments at Kenyatta University.
