University student arrested for selling fake KNEC exams
Detectives attached to the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) have arrested a university student accused of masterminding an online scam selling fake examination papers to unsuspecting candidates.
In a statement on Sunday, October 12, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) said the suspect, identified as Chrispinus Nandafu Naisuma, a fourth-year student at Meru University of Science and Technology, was apprehended in Tigania West following an intelligence-led operation.
“The suspect, Chrispinus Nandafu Naisuma, a fourth-year student at Meru University of Science and Technology, was smoked out of his hideout in Kianjai, Tigania West Sub-County, following a meticulously planned operation by detectives,” the statement read.
The DCI further disclosed that Nandafu was the ringleader of an online network posing as a legitimate educational service.
The platform, which operated under multiple aliases, purported to sell genuine KNEC examination materials while preying on the gullibility of unsuspecting buyers.
“It has since been established that, Nandafu is the mastermind behind an online syndicate trading under the banner ‘The Teacher’s KNEC Exam 2025.’
“In the platform he operates under multiple online personas: Dr. Ibrahim, Madam Salim, Chat GPT, and Violent Kathini Mwendwa, conning unsuspecting members of the public into buying fake exam papers in the false hope of academic shortcuts,” the statement added.
During the raid, detectives recovered several electronic devices and SIM cards believed to have been instrumental in facilitating the scam.
“When detectives finally closed in, they recovered 29 Airtel SIM cards, six mobile phones, two laptops, and several Safaricom and Telkom SIM cards, among other incriminating items believed to have been used in the scam,” the statement further read.
Authorities have since issued a strong warning to students, teachers, and members of the public against engaging with or purchasing purported examination materials online.

“Meanwhile, the DCI and KNEC have intensified a joint crackdown on individuals and syndicates peddling fake examination materials across the country.
“Members of the public are warned against engaging with fraudsters claiming to sell genuine examination papers as all official exams are securely administered and protected by strict integrity measures,” the statement concluded.
Naisuma is currently in custody as detectives finalize investigations.
This comes a month after KNEC cautioned the public against fake examination papers circulating on social media platforms ahead of the national examinations.
In a statement released on Friday, September 5, the examination body dismissed several purported examination papers being shared online as fraudulent and urged Kenyans to remain vigilant against such misleading content.
“Please take note that these question papers doing the rounds on social media are not from KNEC. Do NOT be deceived! Stay alert!” KNEC warned.
The fake examination papers bore the official KNEC logo and formatting and were designed to mimic authentic examination documents.
The fraudulent materials included what appeared to be KJSEA English (Grade 9 KJSEA-2025) papers, Mathematics examination papers also labeled as Grade 9 KJSEA-2025, KJSEA Christian Religious Education coded as 908-2025, and KJSEA Kiswahili papers marked as Msimbo 902-2025.
The papers contained detailed examination structures, marking schemes, and question formats that closely resembled genuine KNEC examination papers, potentially confusing unsuspecting students and educators.
