A 23-year-old arrested after being linked to robbery and rape of students at Maseno University
Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) on Thursday arrested a Maseno University student over alleged involvement in the rape and violent robbery of fellow female students.
In an update by DCI on Friday, May 17, Jacktone Oluoch Owiti is suspected to have robbed and raped two students on the night of April 14, 2024.
“In the April incident reported to the police by a member of community policing within Nyawita area, the two 1st year students aged 19 and 20 were attacked while sleeping in their shared room in the dead of the night, by two assailants who were armed with a machete and a dagger.
The gang went ahead to threaten to stab the fear-stricken girls if they shouted before the alleged involvement in rape and robbing the victims their phones.
“Kicking the door open and threatening the fear-stricken girls with stabs should they make a murmur, the suspects forced themselves on the victims before disappearing with their smartphones,” part of the statement read.

According to DCI, the victims screamed for help once the attackers disappeared and their neighbours came to their aid.
Kisumu West detectives, who pursued the case, eventually caught up with the first suspect on May 15, who was on Thursday, May 16 paraded for identification, DNA sampling conducted, and later arraigned.
The 23-year-old suspect was ambushed at his house in the Chulaimbo area within Maseno, and one of the victims’ phones which was stolen on the fateful night recovered.
“New leads to his accomplice(s) have since been obtained and the investigators are hot on their trail,” the DCI officers noted.
