UoN overtakes Kenyatta University in latest global ranking

The University of Nairobi (UoN) has regained its place as the country’s top institution of higher education after outsmarting Kenyatta University in four subject areas nationally.

This follows the release of the World University Rankings by Subject 2026 report by the Times Higher Education, offering a detailed assessment of universities across 11 major academic disciplines globally.

The report noted that Kenya led in five subject areas: Business and Economics, Life Sciences, Medical and Health, Physical Sciences, and Social Sciences.

According to the report, the University of Nairobi outperformed Kenyatta University in four subject categories, including Business and Economics, Medical and Health, Physical Sciences, and Social Sciences.

On the other hand, Kenyatta University outperformed the UoN in Life Sciences, with both institutions emerging as leading research universities in Kenya.

Global ranking

Globally, elite universities mainly from the United States and the United Kingdom dominated the list with institutions such as Harvard, Oxford, Stanford, Cambridge and Massachusetts featuring.

Oxford University topped the list as the best insitution in Computer Science and Medical and Health, while Harvard University led in Engineering and Life Sciences.

At the same time, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) topped globally in Arts and Humanities and Social Sciences, while Stanford and Cambridge led in Law and Psychology, respectively.
