US Embassy in Kenya issues security alert ahead of vigils by Azimio in honour of Kenyans who lost their lives during protests

US Embassy in Kenya issues security alert ahead of vigils by Azimio in honour of Kenyans who lost their lives during protests.

The United States Embassy on Wednesday, July 27 issued a security advisory to its citizens ahead of the vigils set to be held by Azimio la Umoja late in the day.

Despite promises from the opposition that the gathering will be peaceful, the embassy issued a statement warning that the nationwide events could devolve into violence.

The warning states that traffic disruptions could happen.

As a result, the embassy gave advice to US citizens to stay away from the locations of the vigils, keep an eye on local media for updates, stay away from crowds, and maintain a low profile.

“Actions to take include being aware of your surroundings, reviewing your personal security plans, and carrying proper Identification.

“Have evacuation plans that do not rely on the US government,” read the statement in part.

The US security alert comes after Azimio Coalition announced it will hold vigils across the country in honour of Kenyans who lost their lives in the anti-government protests staged in previous weeks.

Azimio indicated that the events would be held at various points such as bus stops, social halls, county assemblies, and county headquarters.

“Upon lighting the candles and laying the wreaths, groups organize themselves, sing our national anthem and say prayers for justice for those we lost and the injured.

“That here in Nairobi, leaders from the various pillars of society will gather at the designated location already communicated to say prayers, lay wreaths, light candles, and launch a benevolence fund to aid victims and their families,” Azimio instructed its supporters.

Meanwhile, the National Police Service (NPS) is yet to declare its stand over the Wednesday vigils.
