US announces a joint USAID – Kentaste economic empowerment for over 4,500 Kenyan farmers.
Over 4,500 Kenyan farmers will benefit from a collaborative USAID-Kentaste project that has been unveiled by US Ambassador Meg Whitman.
Since 2014, Kentaste, a major manufacturer of coconut products in East Africa, has transformed from a modest family business into a multinational organization that works closely with Kenyan farmers.
The project’s specific objective is to increase the company’s coconut product sales within the United States, and it is supported by Ksh232 million in financing from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).
The move, according to a statement from the US embassy, will boost Kentaste’s output by 67% and enable them to process more than 50,000 coconuts every day.
More than 90 full-time jobs will also be made possible by the project, and at least 1500 farmers will be able to become suppliers.
The project, in accordance with Ambassador Whitman, will also enhance resource utilization across the nation, notably in the Coast and Nyanza areas.
“Through partnerships like this, we are enhancing trade, transforming lives, and combating food waste and its impacts on climate change,” Ambassador Whitman stated.

Whitman added that the project will be gender inclusive, with more than 30 percent of new farmers to be enrolled being women.
It was noted that the scheme will benefit Kenyan farmers, especially at a time when the economic situation in the country is so grim.
The USAID-Kentaste partnership was funded through a grant from the non-profit organization, that anyone eligible can apply for.
“With Kentaste, I now have consistent earnings and better farming techniques,” stated a local farmer who was identified as Abdalla Juma Mwaramunda. “This partnership is transforming our community.”
