KICC chairman details dramatic transfer of Waititu from Industrial Area Remand to Kamiti Maximum Prison

Kenya International Convention Centre (KICC) Chairman Irungu Nyakera has condemned the nature of former Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu’s transfer from Industrial Area Remand to Kamiti Maximum Security Prison.

In a statement, on Tuesday, March 25, Nyakera detailed the dramatic nature of the transfer, suggesting it was driven by fear rather than the pursuit of justice.

“Over six land cruisers came for Ferdinand Waititu from Industrial Area prisons on Monday, March 24, and transferred him to Kamiti Maximum.

What Waititu is going through is not justice, it’s political warfare disguised as law. It’s panic. It’s fear. Fear of his return,” Nyakera claimed.

Nyakera drew parallels between Waititu’s situation and historical political figures who faced imprisonment before making comebacks in Kenyan politics.

“Jomo Kenyatta, Raila Odinga, Koigi wa Wamwere, and Kenneth Matiba; were jailed, mocked, and written off, but history had other plans. This is not Waititu’s end. It’s his awakening,” he remarked.

Waititu’s legal troubles began in July 2019 when the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) initiated investigations into allegations of corruption during his tenure.

The probe focused on the irregular awarding of a Ksh588 million road tender, where Waititu was accused of receiving Ksh25.6 million in kickbacks.

In January 2020, Senate impeached Waititu, removing him from office due to charges of abuse of office and corruption.

The legal proceedings culminated on February 13, 2025, when the Milimani Anti-Corruption Court found Waititu guilty of corruption charges.

He was sentenced to 12 years in prison or given the option to pay a fine of Ksh53.5 million. The court determined that during his time as governor, Waititu illegally awarded tenders and received kickbacks.

Following his sentencing, Waititu filed an appeal and sought bail, citing health concerns such as chest pains and high blood pressure.

However, the court denied his bail application, stating that he failed to provide sufficient legal grounds for his release pending appeal.

Waititu remained incarcerated at Nairobi Remand and Allocation Maximum Security Prison, commonly known as Industrial Area Prison, until his transfer to Kamiti Maximum Prison.
