Wajir Woman Representative Fatuma Abdi Jehow has sparked national uproar after declaring that leaders from the North Eastern region are prepared to rig the 2027 elections in favor of President William Ruto.
Speaking during a public meeting in Wajir on Saturday, July 12, 2025, Jehow said, “Sisi wabunge wa North Eastern maneno ya President, tunasema ‘tutam’, hata kama hatutakua na votes tutamwibia… hio si siri.”
(Translation: “We, MPs from North Eastern, support the President. Even if we don’t have the votes, we will steal them for him… that’s no secret.”)
She also dismissed concerns about the region’s low voter numbers, stating, “Sisi tunangoja debe iletwe, hata kama hatutakuwa na votes, sisi maneyetu ni mafupi,” indicating that some MPs were ready to use underhanded tactics to deliver electoral victory regardless of actual support.
Jehow’s comments have drawn swift backlash online, with Kenyans calling for her censure and questioning the credibility of the country’s electoral process.
Several civil society groups have demanded that the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) investigate the remarks.

This comes the same day Deputy President Kithure Kindiki addressed similar fears in Kuria East Constituency, Migori County, where he dismissed allegations that the Kenya Kwanza administration was planning to rig the 2027 General Election.
Kindiki said the IEBC is an independent institution that cannot be manipulated, adding that the accusations reflect “panic” within the opposition.
“Our opponents are already panicking and blackmailing the IEBC. Commissioners are referees, they cannot favour anyone,” Kindiki said.
He added that President Ruto’s government is focused on development and will seek re-election based on performance, not propaganda.
“We don’t need any favours from the IEBC,” Kindiki said.
“Our strategy is built on delivery.”
As the debate over electoral integrity intensifies, Jehow’s admission and Kindiki’s defence of IEBC have further stirred public discourse on Kenya’s road to 2027.
