System disturbance caused bulk blackout plunging the the country into total darkness according to Kenya Power.

Many areas of Kenya lost power just minutes before 10 p.m. local time Friday night, sending them into darkness.

Much of the country lost power, including the areas of Siaya, Meru, Kakamega, and the capital, Nairobi.

The Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, the largest airport in the African nation, was also without power.

Kenya Power, in a statement to newsrooms on Friday evening, stated that the outage was caused by a “general system disturbance.”

The utility’s board chair, Joy Mdivo, revealed that there was a blackout in its station in Turkana, which is key to the national grid. She maintained that technicians addressed the matter further, revealing that the interruption would span the weekend.

“Turkana being down means a lot of power suddenly is not available to the grid, so the limited power that is there has been prioritized, and only some substations powered back up.

“The engineers have worked all night long, and have managed to get our Turkwel power station to put more into our grid.  Today more parts should get connected, but interruptions will still be expected through the weekend,” she stated.

“We have experienced a general system disturbance thereby causing a major outage. Our technical teams are troubleshooting with the aim of restoring supply at the earliest,” read the report from Kenya Power.

“Sincere apologies for the inconvenience caused. Thank you for the continued partnership.”

The darkness caused a crisis at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport with activities such as luggage handling becoming completely incapacitated.

Processes including immigration and baggage handling at JKIA were paralyzed during the blackout.

Transport CS Kipchumba Murkomen apologized for the situation at JKIA as he promised to meet with the facility’s management on Saturday morning.

“I am really sorry for what has happened at JKIA with the blackout.

There is no excuse worth reporting and there is no reason why our airport is in darkness,” he said.

“I will be announcing the decision we will make tomorrow 9 am at JKIA after a meeting with the leadership of the airport. Once again

I am sorry.”
