Senator Edwin Sifuna of Nairobi has criticized the Interior Ministry for its inaction in the wake of the floods that have devastated the majority of Nairobi County.

Despite a direction from President Ruto, Sifuna stated in a statement sent through X on Thursday, April 25, that the constituencies of Mathare, Ruaraka, Kamukunji, and Embakasi West had not yet received any support from the national government.

“As of this hour, reports from the most flood-affected areas in Nairobi i.e. Mathare, Ruaraka, Kamukunji, and Embakasi West Constituencies are that the promised help from National Government agencies has not arrived. The Ministry of Interior what is not happening?” Sifuna wondered.

President Ruto gave Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki and her counterpart Peninah Malonza, who oversees Arid and Semi-Arid Lands and Regional Development, instructions on Wednesday night to respond to the floods and step up the multi-agency response.

“I directed the ministries of Interior and EAC, Arid and Semi-Arid Lands and Regional Development, and the National Youth Service to immediately respond to the situation caused by the floods. They will immediately step up multi-agency response efforts,” the President wrote on his X platform.

Additionally, the governor of Nairobi gave all Private Service Providers (PSPs) instructions to make sure that all waste collected is transported to the Dandora dumpsite.

Sakaja claimed that four persons have died and six are missing as a result of the continuous, intense rains and flooding that have affected an estimated 60,000 residents of Nairobi.
