Why court freed Mackenzie's wife despite government opposition

Pastor Paul Mackenzie’s wife Rhoda Mumbua freed on Ksh.100K bond by Shanzu law court in Mombasa

Pastor Paul Mackenzie’s wife Rhoda Mumbua freed on Ksh.100K bond by Shanzu law court in Mombasa.

Rhoda Mumbua, the wife of controversial Malindi preacher Paul Mackenzie has been freed on a Ksh. 100,000 bond by Shanzu law court in Mombasa.

Presiding Judge Yusuf Shikanda also offered Mumbua an alternative of Ksh300,000 bond under the condition that she appears in court for all hearings.

In a hearing on Monday, Justice Yusuf Shikanda said that the evidence and investigations presented in court do not directly link Rhoda to any offence.

Additionally, the prosecution had not made submissions on any case against Rhoda, or why she should continue being detained in relation to Shakahola deaths.

Rhoda was arrested on May 2, and has been in police custody alongside her husband Mackenzie, and other suspects linked to the Shakahola cult.

Initially, the State through the Office of Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) had challenged an application made by Mackenzie, his wife, and fifteen others, seeking their release on bond or bail.

During the Monday hearing, the court granted the prosecution 60 days to detain Mackenzie and his co-accused, pending further investigation.

The court also ruled that the 11 additional suspects, who were first arraigned on June 3, would be held for only three additional days.

The suspects will be detained in Shimo La Tewa, Kilifi, and Malindi GK prisons.
