People’s Liberation Party (PLP) leader Martha Karua has hit out at President William Ruto following his recent meeting with retired President Uhuru Kenyatta at State House.

Speaking in an interview Monday, August 4, Karua questioned the motive behind the meeting, accusing Ruto of using Uhuru to salvage his waning influence.

“I saw William Ruto holding on to him to make it look like he is on his side; he didn’t want people to see the event that had led him to State House. Just the other day he was insulting him, now he is trying to get closer to him because he knows he is losing it,” she said.

Karua further revealed that the opposition has not met with Uhuru, asserting that the former president should be left out of daily partisan politics.

“As the opposition leaders, we have not held any meeting with Uhuru Kenyatta though we have individual ways we engage him even if it’s just to wish him well.

“We should have respect for him as the retired president and not involve him in our day-to-day politics. Let us allow him to do the work of uniting nations that has been assigned to him by the United Nations,” she added.

On Friday, August 1, Ruto hosted Uhuru at State House for the joint co-chairs’ session of the East African Community (EAC) and Southern African Development Community (SADC).

The meeting was particularly significant because it marked the first time Uhuru and Ruto had appeared in public together since December 2024, when Ruto paid a courtesy visit to Uhuru at his Ichaweri home in Gatundu.

Photos from the event showed Uhuru being taken on a tour of the newly refurbished State House, and he appeared visibly impressed by the upgrades.

“His Excellency President (Rtd) Uhuru Kenyatta attended the joint summit of the East African Community (EAC) and the Southern African Development Community (SADC) at State House, Nairobi. The summit, co-chaired by AU Commission Chairperson Mahamoud Ali Youssouf, President William Ruto (chair of the EAC) and President Emmerson Mnangagwa of Zimbabwe (chair of SADC), was held to brief the EAC and SADC panel of facilitators on their mandate and the expectations of the two African regional blocs following a meeting of the Heads of State and Governments,” the Office of the 4th President of Kenya said after the meeting.
