Transparency International revokes Noordin Haji’s 2019 leadership integrity award over the withdrawal of high-profile corruption cases.
Noordin Haji, director of public prosecutions (DPP), has had his Leadership Integrity Award for 2019 revoked.
Transparency International (TI) Kenya Executive Director Sheila Masinde stated in a statement that the action was taken in response to petitions and a later review based on worries regarding Haji’s withdrawal of high-profile cases in recent months, which has drawn criticism from several Kenyans.
“Transparency International Kenya has made the decision to withdraw the Leadership Integrity Award (State/Public Officer) conferred upon you in 2019,” reads the statement.
At the same time, Transparency International reiterated its firm belief that maintaining the highest standards of integrity is crucial for all recipients of the awards.
“These petitions have raised serious allegations regarding the withdrawal of high-profile corruption cases, including those for which you were previously recognized, resulting in the loss of public funds,” reads part of the statement.
DPP Haji is thus required to give back the certificate and plaque issued to him for the award.

Some of these withdrawn cases, Transparency International Executive Director Sheila Masinde said, were part of the reason the DPP received the award.
Masinde noted that a petition by the National Integrity Alliance details how the DPP has allegedly derogated from his responsibility, thus eroding public confidence in his office.
According to Transparency International Kenya, The Leadership Integrity Award was 2019 given to Haji in recognition of the role he played in the criminal justice process.
The Judging Panel for the 2019 Integrity Awards comprised independent commissions, enforcement agencies, professional bodies, and civil society organizations.
“They were at that time convicted that your dedication to upholding the rule of law and inspiring public confidence in your office was commendable and worthy of recognition.”
