55-year-old woman jailed for 50 years for trafficking 3kgs of heroin
A Busia Court has sentenced 55-year-old woman; Mwaura Mumbi to 50 years behind bars or an alternative fine of Ksh 50 million after she was found guilty of trafficking 3.9 kg of heroin.
In a statement on Tuesday, March 18, the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) said Mumbi was handed the sentence after the prosecution proved drug trafficking charges against her.
Mumbi was found guilty of trafficking in narcotic drugs contrary to section 4(a)(ii) of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act No.4 of 2022.
“A 55-year-old woman has been sentenced to serve 50 years in jail for trafficking 3.9 Kg of heroin. Busia court today sentenced Mwaura Mumbi to serve 50 years imprisonment or pay a fine of Ksh. 50 million after the prosecution proved a drug trafficking case against her,” read part of the statement.
According to ODPP, the 55-year-old woman was arrested on March 10, 2023, at Busia One Border Point.

Mumbi was found in possession of 3.9 kg of heroin with a street value of Ksh 11,808,000.
During the trial, the prosecution, led by Eric Mose presented compelling testimonies from 10 prosecution witnesses and exhibits in court.
This comes months after Fatuma Ahmed Ali was jailed for 40 years and fined Ksh. 825, 642, 000 for trafficking heroin.
Fatuma was charged alongside her late husband, Swaleh Yusuf Ahmed, alias Kandereni who passed on before the case was determined.
According to the prosecution, the woman was in the company of her late husband when police discovered that they had heroin valued at Ksh275 million in 2018.
