Another American fugitive was arrested in Nairobi for a murder he committed 15 years ago and extradited to the United States to face justice.

The man, who hails from Miami, Florida, is said to have brutally shot a man in a robbery gone wrong in 2010 when he was just 19.

On September 7, 2010, the suspect went to the residence of the victim, one Herbert Caniza and shot him in the chest when he opened the door.

According to a witness, who was the suspect’s roommate, the suspect had planned to rob Caniza of his drugs and money when things took a turn.

During investigations, a “Warner Brothers” t-shirt was recovered at the crime scene, a piece of evidence that didn’t belong to the victim and was modified to serve as a makeshift mask.

The roommate also confirmed that he had been in the company of the suspect when he purchased the shirt.

Another suspect told investigators that the suspect had been “acting paranoid, anxious, and very erratic” on the day of the murder, a behaviour that raised suspicion.

However, the real break in the case came from the suspect’s own mother, who relayed that her son had contacted her just days after the murder and told her that he was in danger and had to urgently leave the area.

Subsequently, she admitted to inadvertently helping him escape justice by booking travel for him to Brazil to stay with family.

It is unclear when he made his way to Kenya, but the Miami Police Department worked with federal agencies and eventually tracked him to Nairobi.

He was extradited to Miami, where he was arraigned and denied bond last week.

The now 34-year-old was charged with second-degree murder and is currently being held at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Centre.

This is the second extradition to the U.S. for fugitives hiding out in Nairobi. In July this year, a 20-year-old man from Washington, USA, was also arrested in Nairobi as part of an operation targeting violent crime.

He was wanted for the January 2024 homicide of Mingyuan Huang in the parking lot of a business in Tukwila, in what the investigation has determined to have been an attempted robbery. Haji was charged in a federal armed carjacking case.
