The Senate has announced that its email system is experiencing difficulties due to an overwhelming number of public submissions on a bill proposing to extend the presidential and other elected leaders’ term limits from five to seven years.
In a statement on Friday, October 25, the Senate disclosed that the system has received over 200,000 submissions from Kenyans, reaching its maximum limit.
However, it gave an alternative email address where Kenyans can submit their views on the contentious bill.
“Thank you for the overwhelming response on The Constitution of Kenya (Amendment) (No 2) Bill ,2024. Due to high volumes of submissions, our email system has temporarily experienced issues.
“The Senate received over 200,000 submissions, reaching the maximum capacity of the allocated email addresses. Alternatively, you may send your submissions to senatejlahrc@parliament.go.ke. We apologise for any inconvenience caused,” the Senate remarked.

The deadline for submitting views was set for Friday, October 25, with the Senate inviting the public to a hearing at the Senate Chamber on that day.
The bill, which is sponsored by Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei, has elicited debate among Kenyans and elected leaders.
Recently, President William Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party condemned the proposal and distanced itself from the bill.
On Wednesday, National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah dismissed the proposal and claimed that it was ‘dead’ on arrival.
“That Cherargei legislative proposal on term limits is dead on arrival, period. He should save his own time, that of other Senators and taxpayers money,” Ichung’wah remarked.
