A form 3 student who passed away shortly after falling ill in school died from a lung infection, an autopsy has revealed.
The postmortem, which was conducted at Montezuma Funeral Home in the presence of the family and officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), confirmed that the student, Consolata Nduku, had succumbed to acute pneumonia, which had severely weakened her lungs.
According to reports from the school, Nduku complained of discomfort to the school matron, who provided her with painkillers, a medication that sparked outrage from her parents.
Later on Saturday evening, her condition worsened, prompting the school to rush her to the Machakos Level 5 Hospital, but she was pronounced dead on arrival.
The school administration dismissed claims of negligence in how they handled her case, an issue that drew the attention of the DCI, who launched a probe into the matter.
“The doctor tried and explained to us that it’s pneumonia that had entered the lungs. We are saying sorry to the family because it is an unfortunate incident,” The school’s PTA chair stated.

According to the family spokesman, he observed that the deceased may have been sick for some days before she sought medical attention.
“If a child is observed to have health issues, let the child be made available to the parents,” he added.
Several tragic incidents involving the deaths of students in Kenyan schools have raised concerns over health monitoring, safety, and accountability within educational institutions.
Brenda Akinyi, an 18-year-old Form Four student at Njoro Girls High School in Nakuru, died on January 30, 2026, after falling ill at school.
Her family alleged negligence, stating they were not informed for days while she was only given painkillers. A postmortem later confirmed cerebral malaria as the cause of death.
A Grade 9 student at Moi Comprehensive School in Nakuru also collapsed and died at the school on February 23, 2026. Parents have since protested by transporting the body from the hospital back to the school, seeking clarity after being told the student had only fainted.
