Azimio issues statement on bipartisan talks as they accuse Kenya Kwanza of being insincere

Azimio coalition accuses their counterparts on the government side, Kenya Kwanza of being insincere about the bipartisan talks

Azimio coalition accuses their counterparts on the government side, Kenya Kwanza of being insincere about the bipartisan talks.

On Thursday, April 13, the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Alliance released a statement regarding bi-partisan talks with the government.

The statement, which was issued by Rarieda MP Otiende Amolo, claimed that the Kenya Kwanza team was not serious about the peace talks.

Azimio asserted that Kenya Kwanza has not yet chosen a co-chair, making it difficult for the negotiations to begin.

In addition, the Raila-Odinga-led camp went on to announce their steps ahead of the talks

“As a further demonstration of our commitment, we hereby announce that We have prepared a draft framework of engagement to guide the process and we await to engage on the same with our commitment,” the statement read in part.

Azimio named Jubilee SG Jeremiah Kioni and Lawyer Makau Mutua to be the assisting counsel in the bi-partisan talks while Paul Mwangi will act as a joint secretary.

Otiende also confirmed that the new appointments meant that the negotiations were no longer a Parliamentary process as initiated by President William Ruto.

“We urge our counterparts to accept the text and spirit of the constitution of public participation consultation and inclusivity in such processes,” Otiende stated.

“We reiterate the commitment of the coalition and this team to an honest, open and genuine dialogue that will result in meaningful change in the lives of the people of Kenya,” Otiende stated.

The opposition camp further demanded Eldas MP Adan Keynan be removed from the bi-partisan team citing that he is still an Azimio MP.

“We note that our counterparts have named MP Adan Keynan as part of their team. Keynan is a member of the Azimio coalition. The issue of party discipline is one of the four cardinal issues on the table. His inclusion is in bad faith, unlawful, and therefore intended to derail the process. We, therefore, request our counterparts to reconsider and replace Keynan,” the statement added.

However, Azimio’s negotiators stated that they were ready to kick-start the process but decried the delay exhibited by the Kenya Kwanza side.

“We note the delay in naming the 7-member team and that up to now they have not named their chair leaving us at a loss as to whom to engage,” Otiende lamented.

The Lawmakers also sounded a warning that the negotiations will not succeed unless every effort is placed to find answers to the four main issues, including a reduction in the cost of unga, electricity and fuel, forensic audit of the IEBC servers, bipartisan reconstitution of the IEBC and respect for democracy and party discipline.
