Azimio lawmaker Sam Atandi kicked out of parliament for claiming DP Rigathi Gachagua was displaying corruption

Azimio lawmaker Sam Atandi kicked out of parliament for claiming DP Rigathi Gachagua was displaying corruption.

Alego Usonga member of parliament Sam Atandi had rose to contribute to the Kenya Drugs Authority Bill, 2022, which was on the floor of the House for deliberations on its second reading.

While rising to support the Bill, Atandi noted that the local pharmaceutical manufacturing industry was being derailed by corruption.

The Azimio MP used Deputy President Rigathiu Gachagua’s fundraisers as an example to highlight how corruption affects these industries.

“Things to do with corruption. Madam Speaker, I believe we have enough laws, but how come they don’t help us? It is because we allow corruption to thrive. The health sector is the most corrupt after te police,” he said.

Atandi seemed to be raising concerns about where Gachagua gets the money for the events, implying that DP Gachagua was displaying corruption in government.

“You see a whole deputy president carrying sacks of money to church to give donations. You are displaying corruption and still want the country to prosper; it cannot prosper,” he said.

While Atandi made his submission, his Mbeere colleague Geoffrey Ruku rose on a point of order to seek the Speaker’s audience as regards what he termed as aspersions cast against the deputy president.

Ruku wanted the Speaker to compel Atandi to withdraw his remarks.

“It is extremely in bad taste for Atandi to paint the deputy president as a corrupt person without any evidence, papers or documents.

According to the rules of this house, you cannot cast aspersions against people who cannot defend themselves here,” said Ruku.

Acting in favour of the Mbeere MP’s argument, the Speaker asked Atandi to take accountability for his remarks by substantiating them with facts, or he withdraws and apologises.

An obstinate Atandi objected to the speaker’s invitation to withdraw, prompting her to ask him to leave the National Assembly chambers.
