Azimio MPs dominate list of active legislators with 15 having never altered a word

Members of the National Assembly allied to the Azimio coalition dominated the list of most active members

Members of the National Assembly (MPs) allied to the Azimio coalition dominated the list of most active members.

In a report by Mzalendo Trust, out of the top five most active, the opposition had four names to it and one from the Democratic party.

They include Makali Mulu (Kitui Central), Beatrice Elachi (Dagoretti North), James Nyikal (Seme), and Ken Chonga (Kilifi South).

The 2023 scorecard analyses the contributions of members and the legislative outputs of the 13th Parliament since being sworn in on September 8, 2022.

Mzalendo Trust, which monitors Parliamentary activity, based its findings on Hansard records from September 29, 2022, to June 30, 2023.

In addition, at least fifteen MPs have not made any contribution on the floor of the House since they were sworn in almost one year ago, a new report by Mzalendo Trust shows.

The scorecard released by the monitoring organization on Wednesday, August 9, shows that Oscar Sudi (Kapseret), George Aladwa (Makadara), and Samuel Arama (Nakuru Town West) have not contributed in the National Assembly since the 13th Parliament was opened.

MPs Ronald Karauri (Kasarani), Mohamed Soud (Mvita), Paul Chebor (Rongai), Ernest Kagesi (Vihiga), Joseph Iraya (Nominated), Teresia Wanjiru (Nominated), Elizabeth Kailemia (Meru Woman Rep) and Muthoni Marubu (Lamu Woman Rep) are yet to make their maiden speeches.

Others who have not spoken are Fred Kapondi (Mt Elgon), Charles Gimose (Hamisi), Feisal Bader (Msambweni), Innocent Momanyi (Bobasi), and Mohamed Soud (Mvita).

Mzalendo Trust noted that the report covers only plenary proceedings, whose information is readily available to the public, and not committee sittings.

“Information on committees’ proceedings is not as readily available. The limited access thus makes it hard to incorporate them into the rankings,” Mzalendo Trust stated in its report.
