Azimio refute claims of advocating for a lie detector during Ruto’s session at the presidential debate

Azimio refute claims of advocating for a lie detector during the presidential debate between Raila Odinga and William Ruto.

Azimio has distanced itself from a letter demanding the planners of the presidential debate deploy lie detectors during the debate session.

The letter, which circulated on social media on Friday, July 22, was allegedly signed by Prof. Makau Mutua, Raila’s campaign secretariat spokesperson.

In the fictitious letter, Azimio had asked the debate organizers to make sure that a lie detector is attached to each candidate to verify their responses.

“Regarding the presidential debate set for 26th July 2022 to be held at the Catholic University of Eastern Africa, Team Azimio has reservations based on a cocktail of factors. Central to our unease has been the preferential treatment given to our competitors in previous debates, specifically, the Nairobi gubernatorial debate and the running mates debate.

“None of the candidates should be allowed to take cheat notes or mobile phones, earpieces, and other gadgets to the debate. A lie detector should be attached to each candidate and results displayed in real-time,” read the letter part.

However, Raila Odinga’s faction, the Azimio coalition has flagged the letter as fake.

The letter also included demands for the delivery of credentials and the formation of a fact-checking committee.

On Tuesday, July 26, Raila Odinga and Deputy President William Ruto will face off at the debate to be held at Catholic University.

The debate will be moderated by Yvonne Okwara of Citizen TV and Erick Latif of KTN News.

The fake letter emerged days after Ruto’s team wrote to the organizers asking the media to make public the time scheduled for questions that will be asked.

The WSR secretariat noted that the moderators did not focus on issues during the running mates’ debate.

Azimio Coalition has also issued conditions to be fulfilled before its presidential candidate, Raila Odinga can participate in the debate.

The coalition has asked Raila Odinga to consider skipping the debate if it will be ‘sideshows’ instead of discussing ‘important issues’ touching on the lives of Kenyans.

They say the platform should not be used to ‘insult’ President Uhuru Kenyatta as it happened during the deputy presidential debate where Ruto’s running mate Rigathi Gachagua spend much of his time attacking President Uhuru.

Raila said that issues of corruption and integrity need to be part of the debate for him to participate.
