Azimio hints at the return of mass protests from Thursday as they accuse Ruto and his camp of not willing to meet their demands

Azimio hints at the return of mass protests from Thursday as they accuse Ruto and his camp of not willing to meet their demands.

The opposition has hinted at resuming street protests from Thursday if a key meeting on Tuesday fails to resolve thorny issues.

Azimio, which halted the protests to make room for discussion, is at odds with Kenya Kwanza over whether the talks should take place within parliament.

The 14-member committee will meet on Tuesday to discuss a number of issues, including whether the negotiations should follow an extra-parliamentary or parliamentary structure.

The other issue is the membership of the dialogue committee, and Azimio is adamant that Kenya Kwanza should not include Eldas MP Adan Keynan of the Jubilee party.

The Kenya Kwanza has countered the demand by insisting that Pokot South MP David Pkosing’ should also be kicked out of the Azimio team as his party, Kenya Union Party, has a working arrangement with the government.

Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Executive Council chairman, Wycliffe Oparanya, said the protests would resume on Thursday if Kenya Kwanza does not replace Keynan.

He said they have given Kenya Kwanza until Tuesday to replace the Jubilee MP.

“The talks were to be concluded within 30 days. By then, they should have addressed the issue of opening the server which will tell who won the election. If we won, we proceed to form the government,” the former Kakamega governor said.

Jubilee Party Secretary-General, Jeremiah Kioni, said the opposition cannot abandon what it has already started “since the government is taking the talks as a joke”.

He said the protests would resume when Raila returns.

“We continue the town hall meetings next week. When Baba (Raila) is back, we will release a schedule for the demonstrations,” he said.

“These people… are misleading Kenyans that the country is broke and can’t pay civil servants. They want the country to collapse.”

Raila left the country for Dubai on Friday but his return date is not known.

His spokesman, Dennis Onyango, told the Sunday Nation that Raila would be away “for a few days”.

“The announcement on the resumption of the talks after Ramadhan was made. I have not heard anything to the contrary,” Onyango said.

Meanwhile, President William Ruto said on Saturday that he is not ready for any talks outside parliament and urged the opposition to follow the law.
