Azimio coalition will now be holding demonstrations anywhere, anytime without notifying the police

Sen. Edwin Sifuna of Nairobi announced on Wednesday that the Azimio coalition will start organizing protests the following week without informing the police.

On March 29, the senator claimed on Spice FM that police had been planning “violence against Azimio” using the notices they have been submitting.

“From next week, the protests will be happening any day and anywhere, spontaneously, [without alerting police],” Sifuna, who is also the Secretary-General of the ODM Party, said.

The senator claims that the police department has turned the demonstrations into a tool to attack lawmakers who are at odds with President William Ruto’s administration.

The senator also defended Uhuru Kenyatta against accusations of financing the Azimio demonstrations.

Ruto’s allies especially Majority Leader in the National Assembly Kimani Ichung’wah have repeatedly linked Kenyatta to the demos, terming him Azimio’s sole financier.

Sifuna says picketing is allowed by the Constitution, and that police have been illegally barring the Azimio demonstrations.

According to Sifuna, police are only notified so that they can provide security during the demonstrations.

Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya Coalition has held protests in two consecutive Mondays, starting March 20, pushing for the lowering of the cost of living and access to IEBC’s electronic voter transmission data.

They also want a “more inclusive” method of picking the team that will select the next seven IEBC commissioners.
