Azimio wins National Assembly majority seats but the 12 independents may tilt in favour of Ruto’s coalition if he’s declared the winner of the presidential elections.

The battle for the control of Parliament will continue as the already declared results show a neck-and-neck race, with Raila Odinga’s Azimio Coalition leading in the National Assembly and Deputy President William Ruto’s Kenya Kwanza Alliance ahead in the Senate.

Azimio boasts a 162-159 advantage at the National Assembly while Kenya Kwanza controls the Senate with 24 seats against Azimio’s 23.

However, the 12 independent MPs elected will determine who controls the National Assembly depending on whichever way they will cast.

The 12 independents may guarantee a confirmed majority for Azimio, or tilt the tables in favour of Kenya Kwanza.

In Azimio, ODM has 86, Jubilee (27), Kalonzo Musyoka’s Wiper (24), Democratic Action Party-Kenya (5), Kanu (5), UDM (5) and United Party of Independent Alliance, UPIA (2).

Those with one MP each are former Lugari MP Cyrus Jirongo’s United Democratic Party (1), United Progressive Alliance, GDDP, Movement for Democracy and Growth, KUP, and National Ordinary People Empowerment Union as well as the National Alliance Party of Kenya.

Kenya Kwanza, UDA has 116 MPs and 21 woman representatives.

Others are ANC (7), Ford-Kenya (6), Pamoja African Alliance (3), Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua’s Maendeleo Chap Chap (2), National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi’s Democratic Party (1), ex-Bomet Governor Isaac Ruto’s Chama Cha Mashinani (1) and former Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mwangi Kiunjuri’s The Service Party (1).

List of independent candidates

The MPs elected as independents are Rahim Dawood (Imenti North), Ronald Karauri (Kasarani), Elijah Njoroge (Gatundu North), Shakeel Shabbir (Kisumu East), Timothy Toroitich (Marakwet West), Joshua Mwalyo (Masinga), Nebert Muriuki (Mbeere South), Geoffrey Mulanya (Nambale) and Kitilai Ntutu (Narok South).

On the Woman Rep front, those elected as independents are Migori’s Fatuma Mohamed, Caroline Ngelechei (Elgeyo-Marakwet), and Monica Muthoni (Lamu).

However four constituencies – Rongai, Kacheliba, Pokot South, and Kitui Rural – had their polls postponed due to ballot papers mix-up.
