Babu Owino lashes out at student leaders for failing comrades as he calls for demonstrations over HELB delay.

Embakasi East MP Babu Owino has asked Student Leaders to organise mass demonstrations over the delay in the disbursement of Helb.

Most students who joined Universities and TVETs are yet to receive their disbursement a month into the start of a new semester.

Babu Owino says the delay in the disbursement has occasioned a situation where students cannot go to class, or afford their basic needs because they have no money to pay as fees, accommodation, and other things.

“I urge Cabinet Secretary for Treasury Prof Ndung’u Njuguna to move with speed and release money to students in various universities,” he said.

He turned the heat on University Student leaders to wake from their slumber saying their inaction is causing pain to their colleagues.

He said they should take action and organise peaceful protests to enable the government to sort them.

“I want to urge all student leaders in this country not to sleep. Student leaders, you are sleeping. You are wasting the constituents who elected you. Instead of representing them, you are misrepresenting them,” he said.

“You must come out. You must call for a demonstration. Let Helb not delay even by one minute. The moment Helb delays there is a lot that is happening in the lives of students. Student leaders wake up because you sleeping in that office.”

Babu went on to say it is wrong for the student leaders to keep mum even as Helb keeps many students waiting and fees increased by several institutions.

“During my time town would be upside down. You must organise demonstrations as soon as possible.”

But even as he called for protests, Babu asked the Student leaders to ensure that no properties were destroyed and that the protests remained peaceful.
