Babu Owino decries harassment after bodyguard and wife allegedly arrested by DCI

Embakasi East MP Babu Owino is crying foul after his personal bodyguard, identified only as Oliver, and the officer’s wife were arrested by Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) officers under unclear circumstances.

The lawmaker took to Facebook in a post on February 24 saying he got wind of the arrest and was alarmed to learn the two had allegedly been assaulted by the same officers who took them into custody. According to Babu Owino, as of the time he went public, nobody had told him or Oliver’s family what charges the couple was facing.

“I have received deeply troubling news that my security officer, Oliver, and his wife were arrested today and reportedly assaulted by rogue officers attached to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations,” stated Babu Owino in a Facebook post.

He further demanded answers from the authorities and called for the rule of law to be respected, insisting on transparency and due process under the Constitution of Kenya.

“No Kenyan should be subjected to intimidation, unlawful arrest, or violence by those entrusted to uphold the law,” the MP stated,

The arrest of Oliver and his wife is only the latest in what appears to be a troubling pattern targeting people close to the outspoken legislator.

Just days earlier, his brother-in-law, Geoffrey Adjiki, who also serves on his security detail, was picked up by six DCI officers on the afternoon of Tuesday, February 17.

Adjiki reportedly called Babu Owino moments after being apprehended, saying he was being driven to the Nairobi area police headquarters, but he never arrived, and his whereabouts became unknown for days.

The MP showed up at the headquarters himself, desperately searching for Adjiki, but left empty-handed. Adjiki eventually resurfaced days later, having been dropped off in Machakos in the early hours of Friday at around 4 a.m.

The incidents do not stop there. In a separate development on February 21, Babu Owino revealed that more of his security officers were arrested and detained at Kisumu Central Police Station following the Linda Mwananchi rally that was held in Kakamega County.

He alleged those officers were picked up not by local Kisumu police but by DCI officers flown in from Nairobi headquarters.

He linked the Kisumu detentions to the Linda Mwananchi rally held in Kakamega, accusing the government of using the arrests to intimidate his team for refusing to align with Interior PS Raymond Omollo’s alleged coordination efforts.
