Nyandarua bar owners stage protests against DP Gachagua demanding conducive a conducive environment for their businesses to thrive.

Alcohol traders in Nyandarua staged protests at the Deputy County Commissioner’s (DCC) Office while demanding a conducive environment for their businesses to thrive.

The majority of the demonstrators were bar owners, who said that since Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua launched a crackdown on illicit alcohol, local officials had been harassing them.

They also bemoaned the fact that their businesses were closing on the pretense of not having the necessary licenses to operate.

Despite the protests, the traders were not able to air their grievances to the DCC as he was not present in his office at the time.

However, a source close to Nyandarua County Administration hinted that the bar proprietors had been running their business unlawfully after hours.

“The bar owners have been operating from as early as 6 am as opposed to the allowed time of 5 pm issued by NACADA,” the administrator said.

He went on to say that the county’s more than sixty bars had closed as a result of the crackdown on alcohol.

Notably, DP Gachagua has issued threats to local officials on multiple occasions, accusing them of being incompetent and collaborating with bar owners to disobey his directives.

He threatened to dismiss leaders last year if they failed to carry out his orders.

However, during the festive season, he celebrated the administrators for leading successful operations in the fight against illicit alcohol.

“I want to say that our fight has been successful. Vita dhidi ya pombe haramu na madawa ya kulevya umeanza kuonyesha matunda. (The fight against illicit alcohol and banned substances is yielding fruit).

“Before that, we were almost losing an entire generation,” Gachagua applauded his juniors.
