Betty Bayo’s mother demands body to be exhumed as fight over her property continues
The mother of the late gospel singer Betty Bayo, Joyce Wairimu Mbugua, has publicly issued a firm demand for a postmortem examination on her daughter’s body.
She insists the family requires absolute clarity regarding the precise cause of death.
Speaking during a Facebook Live session on the night of Saturday, December 6, 2025, Joyce expressed deep concern about the unanswered questions surrounding her daughter’s final moments.
She asserted that only a forensic examination would bring the truth to light.
“A postmortem must be carried out on my daughter’s body so that we can have clarity on what exactly killed her,” she said.
In a separate but related challenge, Joyce has warned her daughter’s widower, Hiram Gitau, also known as Tash, against assuming ownership of any of Bayo’s property or belongings. She emphasised that she is the only legally recognised next of kin.
Joyce revealed that the burial permit for Betty had been issued under Tash’s name rather than hers. She described this move as misleading and legally incorrect, and is now demanding that all official documentation be rectified.
Joyce insists the burial permit and death certificate must be changed to reflect her name, Joyce Wairimu Mbugua.
She stated that she provided her identification card to Tash based on an agreement for post-burial matters to be jointly addressed, but claims he has misused this.
Her sole intention is to protect her daughter’s estate and safeguard the welfare of her grandchildren.

“I want his name removed from the death certificate, as it is false for him to claim he is the next of kin. I am Betty’s legally recognised next of kin, and I have been involved with her since she started singing,” she shared.
Joyce’s greatest concern is the safety and welfare of her grandchildren. She has issued an urgent plea for them to be removed immediately from the house they are currently living in.
She is prepared to personally fund the children’s relocation, insisting they should never have returned to that home after their mother’s passing.
Joyce questioned Tash’s suitability to continue residing with the children.
She urged Pastor Victor Kanyari, the children’s father, to initiate formal police procedures (by obtaining an OB number) to ensure a lawful transfer.
Her desire is for the children to be placed under the care of her other daughter, Wanjiku.
She specifically expressed fear for the vulnerability of Betty’s daughter in the current environment.
On the matter of Betty’s assets, Joyce provided detailed insight, confirming she was well-informed about her daughter’s investments, including parcels of land.
She clarified that reports claiming Betty had instructed to be buried only in Murang’a were false. Instead, she asserted that Betty should be buried on land the two of them purchased together.
Joyce reiterated that all documents and personal items left behind by Betty belong to the children, not the current occupant of the home. She has vowed to actively defend the children’s rights and recover every possession that belonged to their mother.
