The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) countries backs Somalia candidate Fawzia Yusuf Adam for AU Commission Chair position to the disadvantage of Raila.

According to Somalia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA), the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) has voiced support for Somalia’s nomination of Fawzia Yusuf Adam to serve as Chairperson of the African Union Commission for the 2025-2028 period.

“Somalia appreciates and is grateful for the support of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), which has nearly 30 members from Africa, for taking note and endorsing Somalia’s nomination of Fawzia Yusuf Adam for the position of AU Chairperson for 2025-2028,” read Fiqi’s statement.

The statement was issued following a preparation meeting of foreign ministers for the 15th session of the OIC’s Islamic Summit Conference, which took place in Banjul, Gambia, from May 2nd to 3rd.

The conference centered on “Promoting Unity and Solidarity through Dialogue for Sustainable Development.”

Ahmed Moalim Fiqi, Somalia’s Foreign Minister, headed the Somali delegation to the meeting.

Discussions focused on the report and final declaration that will be adopted in the upcoming 15th session, which will be attended by OIC member state presidents and heads of government.

The next OIC Summit, which begins next Saturday, will discuss major political challenges confronting the Islamic world, with a particular focus on the Palestinian question.

Somalia officially began campaigning for its former Foreign Minister, Fawzia Yusuf Adam, to become the next AUC Chairperson in February of this year.

This action put her in rivalry with Raila Odinga, Kenya’s former Prime Minister. Djibouti later confirmed Foreign Minister Mahmoud Ali Youssouf’s candidacy for the same job.

While Raila Odinga appeared to be the favorite at first, the battle for the AUC Chair is becoming more competitive
