Body of Kenyan officer, Benedict Kabiru killed in Haiti still missing since March.
The National Police Service (NPS) on Wednesday officially communicated the death of Benedict Kabiru, a Kenyan officer killed in Haiti.
Reports of Kabiru’s death emerged in March, where it was established that the officer was killed in a gang ambush at Haiti’s capital Port-au-Prince. Then, police dismissed reports of Kabiru’s death, saying he was only missing.
On Wednesday, top NPS officials visited Kabiru’s family in Kiambu County to officially communicate his death in March. Police however said Kabiru’s body is yet to be located.
Kabiru’s uncle and the family spokesman Daniel Kabiru confirmed that eight Senior officers whom they have been in contact with before visited their home around 8 pm, and gave them the report.
This was after a day in court, where the family had submitted a petition seeking the state’s clarity on the death of Kabiru.
In the court session, the Attorney General’s office said it was not informed of Kabiru’s death.

This was contrary to remarks made by the President William Ruto at a United Nations Council meeting, where he mentioned Kabiru among 3 officers under the Multinational Security Support (MSS) mission killed in Haiti.
The family referenced Ruto’s statement on September 22, where he told the UN Council; “I must use this occasion to honour the Kenyan officers, Samuel Kitwai, Benedict Kabiru and Kennedy Nzuve who lost their lives in the line of duty.”
The family moved to court claiming information has been withheld by officers from the Attorney General’s office.
“If the President’s statement is accurate, then it effectively disposes of the request for information since confirmation has already been made at the highest level,” court heard.
In a visit to the family, NPS officials confirmed Ruto’s statement to be true.
“It means that all along the police had not told us the truth,” Kabiru’s uncle told Citizen Digital.
