Calls for a commission of inquiry over Ruto's claim on alleged Chebukati assassination

Raila Odinga’s allies demanded the formation of a commission of inquiry to investigate an alleged murder plot against former IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati.

Narok Senator Ledama Olekina claimed in a statement dated January 17 that President William Ruto’s allegations were serious and needed to be investigated.

He added that the investigation needed to look at previous elections where other election officials had perished in unexplained circumstances.

“Mr. President, to end all conspiracy theories and the talk on the IEBC debacles, let’s cut to the chase! Set up a commission of inquiry and extend it to cover the last two elections,” he stated.

A probe into the claims, according to former Mukurweini MP Kabando wa Kabando, will help clean up the country’s electoral system.

“President Ruto’s resolve that crooks who plotted to kidnap and kill IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati be punished deserves support. Ahead, kidnappers and murderers of IEBC’s Chris Msando should be nailed,” he stated.

Babu Owino, a member of parliament for Emabakasi East, asserted that the President should steer clear of the 2022 elections and work to advance the nation instead.

He insisted that Chebukati presided over a flawed election that did not accurately represent the will of the electorate.

“Can the President and Chebukati stop making noise to Kenyans about the past election? It is water under the bridge. It is time to stop singing and start swinging. Work for the people of Kenya,” he said.

Prior to the declaration of the winner of the presidential election, Ruto said that there was a plot to kidnap and murder Chebukati.

He claimed that the move was aimed at crippling the Commission and delaying the announcement of the results.

However, the ODM and Sifuna criticized the President for the claims and urged him to present supporting evidence.
