Car prices to increase from July as KRA introduces new Current Retail Selling Price (CRSP)
Prices of imported second-hand cars are set to skyrocket starting next month, as the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) is scheduled to introduce an updated Current Retail Selling Price (CRSP) schedule.
In a notice dated May 30, KRA said the new CRSP schedule will take effect on July 1, 2025.
CRSP is the official price that the KRA uses to calculate taxes on imported second-hand cars.
The taxman noted that the CRSP was updated following extensive stakeholder engagement.
“The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) wishes to inform the public that, effective 1st July, 2025, a new Current Retail Selling Price (CRSP) schedule will be applied in the computation of customs value for used motor vehicles imported into the country.
“This follows an extensive stakeholder engagement with stakeholders to ensure that the new CRSP factors in their feedback,” KRA announced.

Car importers have opposed the new CRSP, arguing that it will significantly raise the tax burden on many vehicle models and threaten to collapse the used car market sector.
The updated CRSP has increased import duty on the majority of popular cars in the Kenyan market, including the Toyota Probox, Mazda Demio, Suzuki Swift, Toyota Vitz, and the Mazda CX-5.
For instance, the duty for the 2018 Mazda CX-5 2WD 2000cc petrol has risen to Ksh 923,275, up from Ksh 733,520.
The 2018 Toyota Vitz Hybrid F 1500cc has increased from Ksh 328,866 to Ksh 488,792. The 2018 Toyota Probox hybrid, on the other hand, has risen to Ksh 480,000 up from Ksh 281,000.
However, other vehicles such as the Toyota Land Cruiser, Lexus LX 570, and Volkswagen Tiguan have enjoyed a duty reduction in the new CRSP.
