The Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops (KCCB) has condemned the tragic deaths of two Catholic priests in separate incidents.

In a statement on Thursday, May 29, the bishops expressed sorrow over the deaths, which they say point to foul play and targeted violence against men of God.

“We are greatly saddened by the sudden deaths of two Catholic priests in quick succession. We as the Catholic Bishops of Kenya under the KCCB send our sincere condolences to the Bishop and Diocese of Nyahururu on the death of Rev. Fr. John Maina, and to the Bishop and Diocese of Eldoret for the death of Rev. Er Alois Bett,” the statement read.

The bishops went on to point out the troubling circumstances in which the deaths occurred.

Fr. Maina died while undergoing treatment in what the bishops described as a suspected case of kidnapping and poisoning while Fr. Bett was shot and killed by unidentified assailants.

“We are greatly disturbed that both deaths have come with veiled malicious intent, and mystery. We wish to decry the deaths of these ministers of God and the sense of insecurity and helplessness created by such incidents against the servants of God,” the statement continued.

The bishops painted a harrowing picture of the violence that claimed the lives of the two priests, expressing outrage at what they believe to be premeditated and heinous crimes.

“Fr. John Maina died while undergoing treatment, in what appears to be a case of possible kidnapping and poisoning. This seems to indicate murder or foul play. Fr. Alois Bett on the other hand died violently; shot down by unidentified persons, as he was coming from ministering to the very poor.

“This is murder most foul, and cries to God against its perpetrators. How can it be that security can’t be guaranteed for those serving in these remote areas? Who is really behind such a meticulously executed murder?” the statement added.

The bishops concluded with a demand for a full investigation into the deaths, calling on authorities to bring the perpetrators to justice.

“We demand a deep inquiry into these deaths, to reveal the real circumstances and motives, so as to ensure the security and safety of our priests and all Kenyans going forward,” the statement concluded.
