CDF General Kahariri honoured by France for leadership and security cooperation
The Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) General Charles Kahariri has been awarded the French highest order of merit during a ceremony aboard the French amphibious assault ship DIXMUDE.
The ceremony held on Friday, March 13, saw Kahariri receive the prestigious Legion of Honour from the French Ambassador to Kenya, Arnaud Suquet.
At the same ceremony, Deputy Vice-Chancellor at the Centre for Strategic and Security Studies of the National Defence University-Kenya, Major General Joyce Sitienei, was also awarded the National Defence Medal – Gold Level.
The Legion of Honour (Ordre national de la Légion d’honneur) is France’s highest order of merit, established by Napoleon Bonaparte in 1802. It is awarded for outstanding service in both military and civilian capacities.
Kahariri’s decoration recognises his exemplary leadership, his pivotal role in strengthening defence cooperation, and his contributions to promoting regional security.
Maj Gen Sitienei’s National Defence Medal-Gold Level, established in 1982, acknowledges her individual merit, professional achievements, and dedication to national and international security.
According to the ambassador, the award highlights her exceptional contributions to international peace support training, security cooperation, and defence partnerships between Kenya, France, and allied forces.

During the ceremony, the French ambassador praised the CDF and the KDF for their unwavering commitment to regional security, bilateral cooperation, and fostering long-term military partnerships between the two nations.
The awards came hours before over 800 French military personnel docked at the port of Mombasa amid a defence partnership between the two countries.
The French troops are in the country for a mission focused on training and regional maritime security cooperation and improving stability in the Indian Ocean region.
During their time in kenya, the French military will train jointly with the Kenyan Navy, particularly naval units responsible for safeguarding Kenya’s coastline.
The program will focus on maritime operations, coordination at sea and modern naval tactics designed to improve security across the region’s waters.
