Azimio coalition MPs boo, walk out on CS Ndung'u during 2023/34 budget reading at parliament
Azimio coalition MPs boo, walk out on CS Ndung’u during 2023/34 budget reading at parliament.
Azimio la Umoja Members of Parliament on Thursday, June 15, walked out of Parliament minutes after Treasury Cabinet Secretary Njuguna Ndung’u began presenting the 2023/34 Budget.
The lawmakers, in protest, jeered the CS and chanted songs as they proceeded to hold a press conference outside.
Amid the chaos, National Assembly Speaker, Moses Wetangula, called the house to order.
The MPs staged the walkout minutes after the CS mentioned that the budget was the first for President William Ruto and the Kenya Kwanza administration.
CS Ndung’u proceeded to give highlights of the Ksh3.6 trillion budget minutes after the short disruption.
In their press briefing, the legislators explained that they did not want to participate in the reading of the budget -which they claimed was not friendly to a number of Kenyans.
The Raila Odinga-led faction maintained that they would oppose the budget in totality as they lamented some of the allocations done in Ruto’s first budget.

“We cannot allow a budget that is going to hurt a number of Kenyans. We know that Rome was not built in a day, but we cannot accept this,” Likoni MP Mishi Mboko stated.
This comes after a heated debate ensued in the National Assembly on Wednesday as the Kenya Kwanza administration tabled the Finance Bill, 2023.
The Finance Bill 2023 sailed through the second reading in the National Assembly, with 176 legislators voting in its favor while only 81 MPs from the Azimio camp voted against the Bill.
The Bill will now move to a committee of the whole House, where members can propose amendments and vote for the bill again on a clause-by-clause basis.
