Senate committee opens investigations on Ex-Kitui Governor Charity Ngilu over fire that destroyed KSh 10b files

Senate committee opens investigations on Ex-Kitui Governor Charity Ngilu over fire that destroyed KSh 10b files.

Investigations into a suspected fire event that damaged records pertaining to KSh 10 billion allotted to Kitui country under former governor Charity Ngilu have been sought by a Senate watchdog committee.

The committee’s demands follow the revelation that the midnight event on July 21, 2019, had not been the subject of any investigation.

According to Nation, the Senate County Public Accounts Committee requested that the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) and the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) look into the strange fire that occurred a few days before the fiscal year ended. The committee also accused conspiracy and foul play.

Former Kitui Finance Executive Ben Katungi told the Homa Bay senator Moses Kajwang’-led team that documents were moved to a store before the inferno.

Katungi revealed that his predecessor stepped down from the job immediately after the fire incident.

Katungi informed the committee that KSh 10 billion lost in the fire had not been the subject of reconstructive accounting.

Julius Malombe, the governor of Kitui, noted that there was no proof the county had looked into the incident.

Kajwang stated during the meeting that it was intolerable that all of the records were destroyed and that no one was being held responsible.

“There is no way an entire allocation for a financial year worth KSh 10 billion just went up in smoke. Someone should be in jail,” Kajwang’ said.

The committee further directed the governor to invite the DCI and EACC to open fresh investigations into the incident within 30 days.
