Chelsea’s huge contract decisions preventing the club from making ideal transfers
Chelsea’s huge contract decisions are believed to be preventing the club from making ideal transfers this summer.
Several Chelsea players have contracts that expire in less than a year, which could cause issues in the future.
Chelsea has grown fairly accustomed to dealing with players who are entering the final year of their contracts during the past 12 months.
After a season in which their future was a constant topic of discussion in press conferences and future planning, Thomas Tuchel witnessed Andreas Christensen and Antonio Rudiger leave at the beginning of this summer when their contracts expired.
While Cesar Azpilicueta had a condition added to his contract allowing him to extend his agreement past this summer, Thiago Silva began 2021/22 in a comparable situation until extending his contract by an additional year in January.
N’Golo Kante and Jorginho are yet to see their contract situations resolved.
Talks over the possibility of extending the midfielders’ deals are not expected until the new season.
However, Chelsea’s huge contract decisions extend beyond the starting XI.
Ross Barkley, Michy Batshuayi, and Marcus Bettinelli are all nearing the end of their contracts, so the Blues will probably try to add some value over the next four weeks before they leave for free.
There are also a number of players among Chelsea’s development ranks who could see their time come to an end with the Blues in 2023.
There is the possibility that Chelsea have a number of youngsters with options in their contracts, but there remains an extensive list.
Leo Castledine, Dion Rankine, Dujon Sterling, Jude Soonsup-Bell, Jayden Wareham, Harvey Vale, and Charlie Webster are among the number.
Some may be approaching the stage of being ready to find loan experience.
Signing a contract is often a condition before a temporary departure, however.
Tuchel said of the youngsters: “Sometimes very young players in the transition from youth football to Premier League football it can be OK for a year; however you adapt to physicality and intensity in training, but at some point you need games.”
Chelsea must decide where the future of the youngsters everyone losing out.
It will be an interesting month of the window as Chelsea plans the futures of numerous players who are not quite in Tuchel’s plans for next season.
