China Embassy in Kenya makes donation of KSh3m to MCEDO Beijing school on 16th anniversary.

The Chinese Embassy in Kenya has donated more than Sh3 million to MCEDO Beijing School in Mathare as it marked its 16th anniversary.

The donation of Sh3.2 million was handed by Chinese Ambassador to Kenya Dr. Zhou Pingjian on Friday, during an event to mark the 16th anniversary of its establishment.

MCEDO stands for Mathare Community Educational and Development Organization and was started in 2001. It partnered with the embassy in 2006 and changed its name to MCEDO Beijing School.

To date, the school runs with donations from the Embassy and the Kenya China Economic and Trade Association (KCETA), an association that brings together Chinese companies in Kenya.

More donations were also handed on Friday by KCETA through its representative Yuan Chunkun.

“The friendship between nations lies on the mutual infinity between the two people. So we are very proud of being the partner of the MCEDO School for 60 years,” Ambassador Dr Zhou said.

China marks 60 years of bilateral relations with Kenya this year with great strides on various fronts, including infrastructural development, education, health, culture among others.

“We are very optimistic in the spirit of the MCEDO Beijing School in all of our other relations, corporations where we are getting stronger for mutual benefit,” the ambassador said.

The school director Benedict Kiage said it has grown tremendously, including student enrolment.

“As a result of the expansion project, the student number of enrollment has increased from 200 to 526,” he said.

Kiage hailed the Chinese Embassy and KCETA for its support and partnership saying it continues to benefit the less fortunate in the society.

“The Chinese Embassy in Kenya has awarded Chinese government scholarships to high school graduates from the MCEDO Beijing School, and three students are currently applying for them,” he said.

The Chinese government through the embassy sponsors Kenyan students to undertake various undergraduate and postgraduate courses in China as part of the cooperation and knowledge exchange with Kenya.

“If all goes well, they (MCEDO students) will do their 4-year bachelor program in China and go out to the world this September for free, which is unprecedented for the MCEDO Beijing School,” the school director said of the fully funded scholarships.

Ambassador Zhou has assured of the Chinese government’s continued support for the school because it values education and wants all including the less fortunate in society to benefit.

“We will try our best to tighten this special bond and we wish the very best to the MCEDO Beijing School,” Ambassador Zhou said.

In November 2012, under the call of the Chinese Embassy, KCETA organized the Chinese member companies of the association and other Chinese-funded institutions in Kenya and raised Sh54.4 million for an expansion project.

The school management says this expansion helped the enrolment increase from 200 to 526.
