The Commission for University Education (CUE) has released a list of universities authorised to operate in Kenya.
The list includes public universities, private chartered universities, specialized degree-awarding institutions, and institutions operating under letters of interim authority.
According to CUE, Kenya currently has 35 public universities, including well-established institutions such as the University of Nairobi, Kenyatta University, Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) and Maseno University.
Others are Technical University of Kenya (TUK), Egerton University, Dedan Kimathi University of Technology, Laikipia University and South Eastern Kenya University.
In addition to public institutions, CUE has accredited 28 private chartered universities, which play a significant role in providing higher education opportunities.
They include Daystar University, Strathmore University, Mount Kenya University (MKU), United States International University (USIU-Africa) and Catholic University of Eastern Africa (CUEA).
Others are Kabarak University, Kenya Methodist University (KeMU), Africa Nazarene University, Scott Christian University and Tangaza University.
The CUE has also recognized specialized institutions that focus on specific fields such The National Defence University-Kenya (NDU-K), The Open University of Kenya (OUK) and The National Intelligence and Research University.

Additionally, several institutions are in the process of gaining full accreditation and have been granted interim authority by CUE.
These include Riara University, Pioneer International University, International Leadership University and AMREF International University.
CUE has advised students and parents to verify the accreditation status of any institution before enrollment to avoid pursuing degrees that may not be recognized.
The commission has reiterated that any institution operating without its approval will not have its degrees recognized in Kenya.
“For the avoidance of doubt, any institution operating as a university or degree awarding and which does not appear on the Commission list of approved institutions is illegal and their degree qualifications will not be recognized in Kenya,” CUE CEO Mike Kuria stated.
