DCI launches manhunt for protestors caught on camera vandalizing public property during Monday, March 20 protests.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations declared on Friday, March 24, that it was conducting investigations to apprehend anyone seen on surveillance footage damaging public property during the protests on Monday, March 20.

The DCI ordered individuals who were seen in the pictures and video that were posted from the demonstrations to turn themselves up at the unit’s headquarters by Friday, March 24, at 5 p.m.

According to DCI, investigations were concentrated on a number of offenses, including the vandalism of road signs by protesters and attacks on private companies.

“The Directorate is currently on a manhunt for the suspects whose images appear below as others are being gathered and shall be updated, who will face charges ranging from the robbery with violence, malicious damage to public property and assault among other allied offences,” the statement read.

The detectives were also investigating incidents where protesters attacked police, resulting in a brawl that injured 33 cops.

The DCI detectives were also investigating the disappearance of a gun belonging to one of the policemen that was loaded with 15 rounds of 9mm ammunition.

“The firearm was lost by one of our officers after he was attacked by a gang of a well-coordinated riotous mob, as the officers prevented the destruction of public property in the Embakasi area of Nairobi County,” DCI explained.

DCI has since warned protestors in upcoming demonstrations to observe and respect the rights of other people.

In addition, the unit called upon members of the public to volunteer information that could lead to the arrest of culprits.

“The Directorate of Criminal Investigations cautions members of the public that while the right to assemble, picket and petition is enshrined in our constitution, these rights should be exercised with civility and should not infringe on the rights of others,” the statement added.

Meanwhile, despite government threats, Azimio Coalition has vowed to continue with the mass protests in the renewed push for its demands.
