Demonstrations to go on despite assassination plot- Raila tells police

Raila Odinga now says that the planned Tuesday demonstrations will go on despite an assassination plot against him

Raila Odinga now says that the planned Tuesday demonstrations will go on despite an assassination plot against him.

Azimio leadership on Sunday, April 30, announced that the coalition would continue with planned demonstrations scheduled for Tuesday, May 2, unless the government met their demand.

This is despite assassination plot he claimed is being planned by top officials in the Kenya kwaza administration.

“The warnings have included repeated threats of assassination of Azimio leaders from Mr. Rigathi Gachagua and Mr Moses Kuria. The latest grim warning has come from Hon. William Ruto, who yesterday vowed to stop the planned demonstrations at all costs and declared them “nonsense”.

“If the regime choses to turn our peaceful and constitutional activities into a showdown and assassination that Mr. Kuria and Mr. Gachagua are threatening, so be it, we are ready,” he said in a letter dated Sunday, 30th April.

Raila however, insisted that they will not be cowed.

“The Constitution of Kenya, which in Article 37 provides that ‘Every person has the right to assemble, demonstrate, to picket, and to present petitions to public authorities’ has not been suspended.

“We will exercise our right to assemble, demonstrate, picket as earlier announced, dark threats notwithstanding,” the statement read in part.

In addition, Raila revealed that during the demonstrations, its principals will march to the Office of the President to deliver a petition over the high cost of living.

The coalition further noted that it will lead its supporters to deliver petitions to Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), the National Treasury, and Public Service Commission (PSC).

His statement comes after Nairobi police boss Adamson Bungei banned Azimio demonstrations within Nairobi CBD.

He said the last protests were marred with violence with demonstrators turning up while armed hence the decision to ban it.

“Previous demonstrations were marred with violence as the demonstrators were armed with machetes, who attacked innocent members of the public who were going about their business resulting in the destruction of property, attacks on members of the general public,” Bungei said in a press conference Sunday.
